TALK DESCRIPTIONS

THE ART OF ART DIRECTION

An art director is at once a collector, matchmaker, translator, diplomat, and critic. This talk explores these disparate identities through an in-depth discussion of my work, experiences, and challenges working as an art director for the New York Times’ Opinion section for seven years.

PANELS/ARTIST CONVERSATIONS

I have participated in numerous panel discussions on art direction, illustration, and publishing. Topics have included art direction in Europe versus the United States; the attack on Charlie Hebdo; illustration in Medellín and Bogotá, Colombia; commissioning comics for editorial contexts; the challenges of being a female art director; and many others. I have also moderated conversations with a wide range of artists and publishers, including Kate Beaton, Marion Fayolle, Aisha Franz, Jon Han, Lisa Hanawalt, Hato Press, Icinori, Aidan Koch, Koyama Press, NoBrow, Joost Swarte, Jillian Tamaki, and Brecht Vandenbroucke.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP

This workshop provides an introduction to the excitement and challenges of being an editorial illustrator. Students will create two original illustrations for the New York Times’ Sunday Review section—one for the cover, and one for the interior—all within the fast timeline characteristic of the editorial world.

ART DIRECTION WORKSHOP

An art director is at once a collector, matchmaker, translator, diplomat, and critic. This workshop will provide a comprehensive introduction to editorial art direction by immersing students in each of these unique roles. Through real-life assignments based on my experience as lead art director for the New York Times’ Opinion section, students will practice the artistic, professional, and interpersonal skills needed to be successful and innovative in the industry.
